§ 22-190. Wiring of buildings and equipment.

  • (a)

    In general. All wiring in new buildings and all new wiring in existing buildings for business, industrial or commercial occupancy in the city shall be in approved rigid conduit, electrical metallic tubing or metal moulding except that extensions to existing wiring in old buildings may be made with flexible metallic conduit. However, schoolhouses, theaters, churches, auditoriums, hotels, roominghouses of over ten rooms, apartment houses of over four apartments, and business, commercial and industrial installations shall be wired with rigid conduit, electrical metallic tubing or metal moulding.

    (b)

    Cold storage plants and refrigerators. Cold storage plants and refrigerators shall be wired with rigid galvanized conduit and vaporproof fittings; all ends of the conduit where entering the refrigerator or cold storage room shall be sealed with a good quality of sealing compound. If, in the judgment of the electrical inspector, the refrigerator or cold storage room should be subject to excessive humidity it may be wired with open wiring on porcelain insulators. All switches for cold storage rooms shall be located on the outside of the room with approved pilot lights in connection therewith and the pilot lights shall be in operating condition at all times.

    (c)

    Electric ranges. Electric ranges shall be connected through approved receptacles; circuit wires for electric ranges shall not be smaller than no. 6 awg.

    (d)

    Water heaters. Water heaters of over 1,000 watts shall be connected to a 230 volt circuit; circuit wires for water heaters shall not be smaller than no. 12 awg.

    (e)

    Bell transformers. Bell transformers shall be of the type which will fit in or on an approved outlet box with only the low voltage terminals exposed or be enclosed in a separate cabinet of metal.

    (f)

    Unspecified classes of occupancy. Any class of occupancy not specifically mentioned in this article shall be wired according to the rules of the Florida Building Code governing the wiring, apparatus or equipment for that particular class of occupancy.

    (g)

    Service receptacles. No wire smaller than no. 12 shall be used in any outlet service receptacles.
